Garden
Days is Canada’s coast to coast, three-day celebration honouring of the role
of gardens in our communities and in our lives. It takes place annually, over
the Father’s Day Weekend, June 17 to 19th 2016.
The Maritime spokesperson for Garden Days is
best-selling author and award-winning radio host, Niki Jabbour, who is taking part in a ‘Garden Days Garden Party’ at the Halifax Public Gardens on
Saturday June 18th from 9:30 am until 1:30 pm.

Days Garden Party:
- 9:30 to 10:15 am - Gardener Yoga, led by local yogi and garden expert, Jane Rostek.
- 10:30 to 11 am - Q & A Gardening Panel with Niki Jabbour, Crystal Godfrey (Secret Gardens by Crystal), Iain Jack (Fernwood Plant Nursery) and Jane Rostek. Come ask your gardening questions & get expert advice!
- 11 to 11:30 am - Niki Jabbour shows how to create a ‘Garden BFF’ planter that features veggies, herbs & edible flowers to feed you AND the pollinators!
- 11:30 to noon - Jane Rostek shares the best spring-planted bulbs for pots & gardens - dahlias, gladiolas and more!
- Noon to 12:30 pm - Intimidated by container gardening? Let Crystal Godfrey inspire you with her creative demo on designing a beautiful & artistic potted garden.
- 12:30 to 1 pm - Iain Jack has Fern Fever! Come learn about the Victorian obsession with ferns as he digs into the roots of ‘Fern Mania’ and showcases rare & unusual varieties.
- 1 to 1:30 pm - An informal follow-up Q & A with our experts!
Garden Days is organized by the Canadian Garden
Council, and is a three-day celebration of gardens and gardening. The
program’s objective is to draw attention to Canada’s garden culture, history
and innovations, and to underscore the importance of public and private
gardens, the values of home gardening and the promotion of environmental
stewardship.
Garden Days is sponsored by: VIA Rail Canada, Enterprise Canada,
GardenDecor.ca, Scotts Miracle-Grow, Garant, Garden Making magazine, Baxter
Travel Media and Savvy Gardening, and supported by the Canadian Nursery
Landscape Association.

2016 NSAGC Convention Invitation
Fellow Garden/Horticultural Club Members:
Over the past year a committee of garden club members from the Antigonish/Guysborough/Pictou District have been working very hard to provide an exciting program for the 2016 NSAGC Convention.
We want to personally invite you to the conference and to encourage you to send your applications in as early as possible. A total of 250 delegates will be accepted. Avoid last minute disappointment.
The Pictou County Wellness Centre will be our headquarters. This new facility, just off exit 23, TCH, is large, modern and has ample parking for all. It is also close to the hosting hotels, Travelodge and Holiday Inn Express. Blocks of rooms at these motels are being held for us until May 3rd. After that date they are open to the general public. Complimentary breakfasts will be served at both.
A second boat cruise has been scheduled to leave the New Glasgow dock at 10:30 p.m. on June 3rd for early risers. A compliment of home gardens will welcome all on the afternoon of June 3rd.
We encourage clubs/members to participate in both the floral arranging competition and the photo contest. Check our newsletter or website for details on both.
Looking forward to welcoming many of you on June 3rd & 4th.

Registration in lobby of lecture hall starts at 9 am.
Opening with a panel discussion on topic:
"Preserving Our Native Medicinals Through Creating Botanical Sanctuaries"
Workshops will include such topics as - permaculture practices, creating an herbarium, native plant propagation, and of course, a plant walk focussing on indigenous plants.
Presenters include Graham Calder, Cheendana, Jeanette Poirier, and others not yet confirmed.
Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at noon. All members welcome.
There will be an opening and closing ceremony and a giveaway.
There will also be a marketplace, and a penny auction.
Registration fee $40.00 for members and $65.00 for non-members of HANS.
Bring your own lunch, please. Herb tea will be available.
Please bring something for the giveaway.

This year's guest speaker is Carol Goodwin, an Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Agriculture of Dalhousie University, and a visiting lecturer for both the Horticulture Department of Writtle College in Essex, UK and the Landscape Design Department at HÄME Polytechnic in Lepaa, Finland.
Ms. Goodwin, a knowledgeable and captivating speaker, will be discussing the influence that England has played in the development of Canadian gardens.
This lecture is open to all and free of charge.

As of Feb 4, 2013, the Atlantic Rhododendron & Horticultural Soc. Seed Exchange is open to the public. Orders will be received until March 31, 2013.
The online list contains ordering information, order form and quite a lot of resource information. The list will be updated frequently to reflect any seed lots which become unavailable.
Our 2013 list represents an interesting array of rhododendron, azalea and companion plant seeds. Gardening aficionados may welcome the opportunity to obtain some of the samples.
Could you please share this note with Rhododendron Society and/or Garden Clubs of your acquaintance.
I am happy to give more information to anyone interested. I can accept email orders initially, but do require receipt of the order form to finish the order.

Donna and John's garden began modestly in the 70’s on their beautiful property. Today the garden covers approximately 8 acres and includes a large spring fed pond with two bridges crossing over two small islands. On a large rock in the pond, a bronze frog sits eyeing a bejeweled dragonfly attached to aged iron bulrushes to add a touch of whimsy. Arbours enhance the natural beauty of flowering beds which overflow with a wide variety of perennials, annuals and bulbs. Each arbour is covered with its own flower – roses, clematis, honeysuckle, grape vines and wisteria. A stunning collection of more than 250 different rhododendrons and azaleas, assorted shrubs and specialty trees, such as the stewartia, catalpa and tulip tree add to the splendour. Following the garden paths alongside the ponds, you experience the reflective power of the water as well as the waterlilies themselves and other water and marginal plantings. And, no matter where you are within this garden paradise, you are surrounded by woodlands full of spruce, fir, maples and white birch as well as many native shrubs like the serviceberry, choke cherry, viburnum, rhodora and many more. Advancing up the gradual grade of the garden, the Silver’s have put in ‘roads’ which they have named after each of their three grand-daughters. John continues to manipulate the naturally fed streams into what some day may be a small waterfall feature. Most days however he is heavily involved in cutting up and cleaning up the windfall that has occurred and continues to occur since Hurricane Juan. This only adds to the fantastic view at the top of the garden which overlooks Shad Bay.

Items up for bid this year include gift certificates for accommodations at lovely local inns & resorts, beautiful pottery and art by local artists, as well as gift certificates from local businesses, and from EAC staff and volunteers, offering up everything from fly fishing lessons, to appliance energy audits!
We are pleased to welcome Special Guests, Canadian comedy icon Cathy Jones, as Auctioneer, Olga Milosevich, CBC Radio host and producer, as EMCEE, and musicians Jeff Torbert and Hausmusik
Tickets: $7 regular, $5 students/seniors/unwaged
The Ecology Action Centre has been working to build a healthier, more sustainable Nova Scotia since 1971. The Garden Party is the EAC's biggest annual fundraising event. All proceeds, including ticket sales and winning bids on auction items, go directly towards our core operations.

Mark Cullen in Windsor, Feb. 10
Hello my name is Susan Wright and I'm helping with a fund-raiser sponsored by Windsor Home Hardware.
On Feb. 10, 2012 from 7-9 pm CTV/ATV Garden expert Mark Cullen will be in Windsor NS at the Imperial Theatre.
Coinciding with his presentation is a concert by very talented grades 7-12 band students from West Hants NS who are traveling on a band trip to Quebec in May 2012.
The evening will feature an informative talk with Mark Cullen followed with a Q&A session and a musical interlude in the middle.
Tickets to the event are $10 and maybe purchased at the door with every ticket holder receiving a gift bag valued at $10 and a chance to win several door prizes!
Oh did I mention there will be a reception to follow with homemade treats! All the proceeds will go to our talented kids' trip to Quebec. Blessing of the Boats

This is a reminder that our annual Blessing of the Boats is happening this Sunday, July 31st, at 2:30 down by the monument at the SS Atlantic Heritage Park with a reception to follow in the Terence Bay Firehall. Every year, a large crowd participates in the service around the SS Atlantic Monument. As many as 50 boats might also be spotted on the water in the Terence Bay observing the service. This event has been a community tradition for over 30 years! Feel free to call 852-1557 for more details.
