NSAGC Updates
We are very pleased to announce that the NSAGC has taken a booth at the upcoming SaltScapes Expo at the Exhibition Center, formerly Exhibition Park, happening from April 22 -24. This is not an encouragement to attend, unless you are planning on being there anyway, however, we will be selling bare root Astilbe "Peach Blossom for $3 each, and there will be a draw for a planter. The main emphases of the booth will be to promote Garden Clubs to the public and encourage gardeners to join a local club.
As you know, District Meeting is fast approaching. (May 7th, at St Lukes United Church, St Margaret's Bay Rd.) The plant this year (incase you missed it) is the Rose Milkweed. Asclepias incarnata, Rose Milkweed, is also commonly called Red Milkweed, Marsh Milkweed, or Swamp Milkweed. It has a lovely vanilla fragrance, and large rosy pink or light purple flowers loved by both Monarch and Swallowtail butterflies. This deer-resistant plant grows in moist to average soils, and blooms in July and August. Later, large pods form which will break open to reveal seeds that will float away in the wind. It may reseed in the garden but the seeds do need to go through a winter and it will usually not bloom in the first year. I am assured they will not take over your garden.
In an effort for everyone in the area to hear celebrity speaker, Sean James, FernRidge Landscaping, we, as a district, booked a large hall at the BEAVERBANK KINSAC COMMUNITY CENTER 1583 BeaverBank Rd, BeaverBank. It is about 8 minutes from the intersection between Sackville Drive (by Kent) and Beaverbank Rd. I realize it is not central, but the price was excellent and they were able to accommodate our needs. It is a new building with everything we want and will hold over 200 people. The date we booked is May 18th at 7 pm. Two topics will be selected by the Fall River Club and will be announced at a later date. They will be 2 one hour presentations back to back with tea in between. Fall River Club is contributing a large amount to the speaker and will provide the tea and coffee for the break. I was required to put a title for the booking so on the spot I called it Gardening With Sean James. http://fernridgelandscaping.com/. We would like a few volunteers to bring cookies or sweets to go with our tea/coffee. Please email me at pamela.maclean@gmail.com if you can contribute.

2016 NSAGC Convention Invitation
Fellow Garden/Horticultural Club Members:
Over the past year a committee of garden club members from the Antigonish/Guysborough/Pictou District have been working very hard to provide an exciting program for the 2016 NSAGC Convention.
We want to personally invite you to the conference and to encourage you to send your applications in as early as possible. A total of 250 delegates will be accepted. Avoid last minute disappointment.
The Pictou County Wellness Centre will be our headquarters. This new facility, just off exit 23, TCH, is large, modern and has ample parking for all. It is also close to the hosting hotels, Travelodge and Holiday Inn Express. Blocks of rooms at these motels are being held for us until May 3rd. After that date they are open to the general public. Complimentary breakfasts will be served at both.
A second boat cruise has been scheduled to leave the New Glasgow dock at 10:30 p.m. on June 3rd for early risers. A compliment of home gardens will welcome all on the afternoon of June 3rd.
We encourage clubs/members to participate in both the floral arranging competition and the photo contest. Check our newsletter or website for details on both.
Looking forward to welcoming many of you on June 3rd & 4th.
Sincerely,
Don Butler

2015 NSAGC Convention
Invitation
A warm welcome from the Western District of the Nova Scotia Association of Garden Clubs. This year our convention is in Yarmouth, NS at the Rodd Grand Hotel 417 Main St. on June 5th and 6th
Our area truly loves our gardens and is peacock proud of them. There will be self-guided tours of local gardens and directions to unique walking paths. The convention starts with a tea sponsored by Mayor Mood and the town of Yarmouth. It is to be in our historic Frost Park next to the Town Hall. We have entertainment and a ghost walk tour later on Friday.
Saturday is a full day of speakers, vendors, door prizes and is capped off with a lovely banquet at the Rodd’s Grand Hotel followed by our own award winning author Niki Jabbour as guest speaker. Niki gets the most out of a vegetable garden and is willing to share her secrets.
Other parts of our convention you might like are a photo contest, see NSAGC site for regulations and a floral design competition. Only one floral design per club, but you can certainly collaborate. Rules will be posted on the NSAGC site later.
We would truly like to show you our hospitality. Register today and enjoy some time with like-minded folks.

As an aside, we will endeavour to get a small bus for the Vineyard tours, but we have nothing firm yet. Seeing that all tour location are within a 5 to 10 minute drive from the Old Orchard Inn, we will at least have maps for everyone.
For those looking to send photos for the Photo Contest, have them sent to the following address (see "Contests/Photo Contests" tab on website for rules):

Hello all, could you pass/forward on the following info to your District Clubs please.
The NSAGC Convention 2012 Registration form is now online at the NSAGC Website and will hopefully be in the next NSAGC Newsletter as well. It is important to note that the Old Orchard Inn will only hold 60 rooms for us until the 8th of May 2012, so people wanting to stay at those facilities should book before that date.
