History In The Making

Have you ever visited this wonderful living tribute to Peggy Of The Cove located at 10235 Peggy's Cove Rd., Glen Margaret, NS?

"Peggy of the Cove was the title given to the sole survivor of a shipwreck on Halibut Rock, Nova Scotia, near the famous fishing village, Peggy's Cove. Her story is being developed from legend to reality through song, books, dolls and museum by local author, artist, photographer and storyteller, Ivan Fraser."

Ivan has contacted the PAGC to see if we would be interested in helping him establish his first official garden this summer!  More details to follow!

Check out this eye-catching tourist attraction at peggyofthecove.com and enjoy the beautiful paintings, artwork and landscape surrounding his wonderful stories of Peggy Of The Cove.  What a great Sunday afternoon destination!!

Mark Cullen in Windsor, Feb. 10

Passing this along for your info...

Hello my name is Susan Wright and I'm helping with a fund-raiser sponsored by Windsor Home Hardware.

On Feb. 10, 2012 from 7-9 pm CTV/ATV Garden expert Mark Cullen will be in Windsor NS at the Imperial Theatre.

Coinciding with his presentation is a concert by very talented grades 7-12 band students from West Hants NS who are traveling on a band trip to Quebec in May 2012.

The evening will feature an informative talk with Mark Cullen followed with a Q&A session and a musical interlude in the middle.

Tickets to the event are $10 and maybe purchased at the door with every ticket holder receiving a gift bag valued at $10 and a chance to win several door prizes!

Oh did I mention there will be a reception to follow with homemade treats! All the proceeds will go to our talented kids' trip to Quebec. We hope you'll come out to support this great event and get to talk to Mark Cullen. For more information about this event you can contact the Windsor Home Hardware or drop me an email.

Thank you

Gingerbread boys

Lebkuchen
½ cup butter
¾ cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 cup molasses yellow dock syrup
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon chilli powder
Cream butter and sugar, then add egg and molasses. Sift in dry ingredients, mix.  Turn out on a surface and knead in enough flour to make smooth dough.  Roll flat and cut into shapes.  Bake 350 for 15 minutes.

John's Old Fashioned Shortbreads

John has kindly shared his old fashioned shortbread recipe!!

John's Old Fashioned Shortbreads
1 1/2 cups icing sugar
1 3/4 cups soft butter
Mix these together well in a mixer but not too high speed, or you will incorporate too much air into the mix, just med. speed.

2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
2/3 cup cornstarch
Mix these dry ingredients together very well before adding to the butter/sugar mix.

Mix everything together at low speed untill it is all incorporated. (Mixture will be crumbly like biscuit dough).

The next part is a bit messy, I use disposable latex gloves.

Portion out maybe 1/4 of the dough onto parchment paper and squeeze the dough into a log, shaping with a knife and the parchment, or you may scoop out the dough like cookies if preferred. Once shaped, this dough may be frozen for later use, or used immediately.

Place the cookies (sliced with a knife or scooped) onto a parchment lined tray.
Bake 325 degrees for about 15 min.
When the edges are slightly brown, remove from oven and cool.

Val's 2 cents:
For a real twist, add a light sprinkling of lavendar buds and a bit  of lemon peel!

Enjoy!
John

NSAGC Convention 2012 Registration

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Paul Despres <pdespres@av.eastlink.ca>
Date: Thu, Dec 15, 2011
Subject: NSAGC Convention 2012 registration form is now online

Hello all, could you pass/forward on the following info to your District Clubs please.

The NSAGC Convention 2012 Registration form is now online at the NSAGC Website and will hopefully be in the next NSAGC Newsletter as well. It is important to note that the Old Orchard Inn will only hold 60 rooms for us until the 8th of May 2012, so people wanting to stay at those facilities should book before that date.

As an aside, we will endeavour to get a small bus for the Vineyard tours, but we have nothing firm yet. Seeing that all tour location are within a 5 to 10 minute drive from the Old Orchard Inn,  we will at least have maps for everyone.

For those looking to send photos for the Photo Contest, have them sent to the following address (see "Contests/Photo Contests" tab on website for rules):

Wed. Dec. 14th Holiday Potluck Social

Our annual holiday potluck social is just around the corner - Wed. Dec. 14th at 7pm!!

Our social organizer, Joan Jandron, has arranged everything except the food! She has asked us to give her an idea of what each of us is planning to bring... sandwiches, finger foods or sweets. You can reach her via email at wjandron@hfx.eastlink.ca or by phone at (902)443-7304.

We are looking forward to having a chance to celebrate the holiday season together!
We will once again be collecting for the local food bank at each meeting, so please bring along a food item for the donation box - every bit helps!
